Dotterels Long Mynd Shrops May 2011
DOTTEREL ARE SUMMER VISITORS AND PASSAGE MIGRANTS - THEY TURN UP EACH YEAR AT TRADITIONAL SITES -I SAW 6 TODAY AT LONG MYND, SHROPSHIRE - A BEAUTIFUL PART OF SHROPSHIRE -
WHEN THERE ARE SEVERAL TOGETHER THEY ARE KNOWN AS A TRIP -A FEW PAIRS BREED IN THE HIGHLANDS OF SCOTLAND , BUT MOST END UP IN THE ARCTIC TUNDRA TO BREED-IT'S UNUSUAL FOR FEMALES TO BE BRIGHTER THAN MALES, BUT THIS IS THE CASE WITH DOTTEREL- THE MALE
INCUBATES THE EGGS AND LOOKS AFTER THE YOUNG -FEMALES ARE ONE OUR MOST STUNNING WADERS IN SUMMER PLUMAGE

HOBBY AT LAKENHEATH R.S.P.B. RESERVE, SUFFOLK - 50 OF THESE DASHING LITTLE FALCONS HAWKING FOR INSECTS OVER LAKENHEATH FEN - JUST BACK IN FROM AFRICA TO BREED -WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE THEY CAN CONGREGATE IN QUITE LARGE NUMBERS, BUT 50 IS AMAZING
MALE RUFF, TITCHWELL, NORFOLK - NEARLY IN FULL BREEDING PLUMAGE - A FEW BREED IN THE UK, BUT MOST WILL RETURN TO THE CONTINENT TO BREED AND FIGHT WITH OTHER MALES AT A LEK -
SIMILAR TO BLACK GROUSE
AVOCET TITCHWELL RSPB
BARNACLE GOOSE, CARSINGTON WATER, DERBYSHIRE - THIS IS PROBABLY A GENUINE WILD BIRD-IT WAS RINGED AT CAERLAVEROCK IN SCOTLAND IN 1999 - BUT KEEPS RETURNING TO CARSINGTON WITH THE FERAL POPULATION - ITS PLUMAGE IS MUCH GREYER - IT DOES RTURN TO CAERLAVEROCK IN WINTER SOMETIMES
