Desert Wheatear, Cromer Point, North Yorks

Four more fantastic photos of the 1st-winter male Desert Wheatear at Cromer Point by Glyn Sellors, now entering its fourth week of residency (found November 26th).

Can it repeat the length of stay of the Cornish bird of 1994, which wintered from 27th November 1994 right up to 20th March 2005? Or will the hungry looking Merlin patrolling the area put an early end to it?

Lesser Canada Goose, Mersehead RSPB, 25th November

Photographed by Tristan Reid, this Lesser Canada Goose appears to be a best fit for Taverner's Canada Goose (Lesser Canada Goose of race taverneri), but with identification criteria and taxonomy changing at such a rapid pace, it could be interesting to see how we label birds like this in ten years time.

Remember that although the BOURC have split Canada Geese into the seperate species Lesser and Greater, and the BBRC acknowledge that wild vagrant Canada Geese occur in Britain, neither committee has so far accepted any records of Lesser Canada Geese!

Desert Wheatear, Yorkshire, 1st December 2007

One of two in the country at the moment, this first-winter male showed well at Cromer Point, North Yorkshire allowing Glyn Sellors to get some fantastic shots of this stunning wheatear.
